Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation
PNF concept Podgorica
PNF (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation) is a concept rather than a single technique. It’s a therapeutic philosophy we apply in practice.
It uses receptor stimulation to improve the interaction between muscles and nerves, facilitating movement.
Various stimuli are used (manual contact, verbal and visual cues), traction and approximation, and stretching.
PNF is a painless method. The therapist focuses on what the patient can do and develops that potential with the aim of restoring function. Work is always individual and collaborative, building a strong sense of safety.
PNF techniques
Commonly used techniques include: rhythmic initiation, agonist reversal, repeated stretch at the beginning of movement, repeated stretch during movement, replication, hold‑relax, contract‑relax, dynamic reversal, stabilizing reversal, rhythmic stabilization. Depending on the problem, the therapist selects appropriate techniques. For example, if a joint lacks stability, stabilizing reversal and rhythmic stabilization are used; if muscles are weak, agonist reversal and dynamic reversal may be chosen; if a muscle is shortened or tight, hold‑relax and contract‑relax are applied. There are no absolute contraindications—PNF is widely applicable and is particularly helpful in neurological and orthopedic conditions.
